The Artists Behind the Sound

The Musicians Behind Jazz@First and Big Band at The Redmoor

Great jazz is built on individual voices coming together.

The Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra brings together some of Greater Cincinnati’s most accomplished jazz musicians, composers, arrangers, and educators. Each artist brings a distinctive musical voice to the ensemble—and together, they create the bold, sophisticated sound that defines CCJO.

Our musicians are active performers throughout the region and beyond, and many also serve as educators at institutions including the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Miami University, Northern Kentucky University, Xavier University, and the University of Dayton.

From the power of the brass section to the color of the saxophones and the pulse of the rhythm section, every chair plays a part.

TWO SERIES. ONE CCJO FAMILY.

Jazz@First

Intimate. Acoustic. Unamplified. Small-group jazz on Sunday afternoons.

Big Band at the Redmoor

Bold. Brassy. Full orchestra. Classic big-band sound with dinner service.

The musicians you'll meet here perform across CCJO's two signature series. At Jazz@First, smaller groups take the stage for intimate, acoustic chamber jazz on Sunday afternoons at First Unitarian Church. At Big Band at the Redmoor, the full orchestra delivers the power and polish of the classic big-band tradition. Many of our artists appear in both, so the faces you see in one series may surprise you in the other.

Saxophones

The color, texture, and improvisational voice of the orchestra.

Trumpets

From warm melodies to soaring lead lines, the trumpet section brings brilliance and energy to the CCJO sound.

Trombones

Rich, powerful, and unmistakable, the trombones provide depth, punch, and one of the defining sounds of a big band.

Rhythm Section

Piano, guitar, bass, and drums provide the foundation, driving the groove, shaping the harmony, and keeping the music moving.
