Featuring works by masters including Duke Ellington\, Charlie Parker\, Miles Davis and more\, the concert will showcase Aebersold’s deep knowledge and passion for the music. Renowned as one of jazz’s premier educators\, Jamey brings his signature blend of insight\, instruction and humor to every performance. \nComplimentary wine and cheese at intermission are included with your ticket. \nJazz@First Series Sponsor: Al Harris \n__________________________________ \nAbout the Artist: Jamey Aebersold\, saxophone and author\nJamey Aebersold was born July 21\, 1939\, in New Albany\, Indiana. He attended college at Indiana University and graduated in 1962 with a Masters Degree in Saxophone. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by Indiana University in 1992. He also plays piano\, bass and banjo. \nIn 1989\, the International Association of Jazz Educators inducted Jamey into their Hall of Fame at the San Diego convention. With this award\, Jamey joins other jazz luminaries such as Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Charlie Parker\, Louis Armstrong and others. \nJamey is an internationally-known saxophonist and authority on jazz education and improvisation\, and has developed a series of Jazz Play-A-Longs (book and CD sets now numbering almost 130 volumes) as well as various other supplemental aids for the development of improvisational skills. The Aebersold book and recording sets allow a musician the opportunity to practice and improvise with well-known jazz personalities at home as well as in the classroom. The recordings employ some of the best jazz musicians in the world. This concept has been responsible for changing the practice habits of thousands of musicians around the world. \nJamey was one of the first to encourage small group classes that concentrate on jazz improvisation\, and he is the director of the Summer Jazz Workshops which now have 40+ years on record. Jamey feels that improvisation is something all people can do—and his clinics and lectures concentrate on demonstrating how the creative and spontaneous nature of each person can be brought to light. \nThese weeklong Summer Jazz Workshops are having a profound effect on musical communities around the world. The Workshops have traveled to Australia\, New Zealand\, Germany\, England\, Scotland\, Denmark and Canada. Every summer there are at least two weeklong Workshops in the U.S. These camps employ many of the finest players/teachers in jazz and are open to any serious jazz student regardless of ability or age. \nIn 2007\, Jamey was awarded the Indiana Governor’s Arts Award by Mitch Daniels\, the Governor of Indiana. \nOn October 4\, 1987\, CBS’ “Sunday Morning” with Charles Kuralt and Billie Taylor featured Jamey with the Summer Jazz Workshops in an exciting jazz educational segment. \nJamey has taught at three colleges and universities in the Louisville\, Kentucky area and has made guest appearances in dozens of cities around the world. While conducting a jazz clinic in Brazil he produced a 110-minute DVD/video appropriately titled “Anyone Can Improvise” which has become a best-seller. \nJamey’s hobby is listening to jazz\, especially new young players. He also enjoys playing basketball (he has hit 50 free throws in a row!) and is very much interested in Metaphysics and spiritual pursuits as they apply to the growth of the individual. In December 2004\, the Jazz Midwest Clinic bestowed upon Jamey the “Medal of Honor” in Jazz Education. \nIn 2014\, Jamey was awarded The National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz. Jamey Aebersold is the recipient of the 2014 A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy\, which is bestowed upon an individual who has contributed significantly to the appreciation\, knowledge and advancement of the art form of jazz. \nJamey has been a driving force in America’s native art form\, Jazz\, and continues to kindle the fires of musical imagination in those with whom he comes in contact. \nLearn more at jazzbooks.com. \n__________________________________ \nAbout the Artist: Phil DeGreg\, piano\nPhil DeGreg began playing the piano in his childhood and now performs as a jazz pianist internationally. His earliest jazz influences were Bud Powell and Bill Evans\, but he is accomplished and comfortable in a wide range of jazz styles\, ranging from mainstream to bebop to Brazilian jazz. A graduate of Yale and the University of North Texas\, he toured with the Woody Herman Orchestra in the 1980s and has 10 CDs to his credit as a leader. For 13 years he accompanied many national and international jazz artists in the house trio in Cincinnati’s famous Blue Wisp Jazz Club. He has been on staff with the renowned Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops since 1983\, and has performed and taught in Europe and South America. \nPhil DeGreg is the retired Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts study grants. In 2008 he was awarded a 4-month Fulbright Fellowship as a lecturer in Brazil. \nHis text “Jazz Keyboard Harmony” is a practical text for teaching jazz harmony for all musicians\, and is used all over the world in universities and for private study. \nLearn more about Phil DeGreg on his website http://phildegreg.com.

In 2008\, he received a GRAMMY© Award for his arrangement of “I’m Going to Live Til I Die\,” written for Queen Latifah. \n“I’m flattered with any awards or recognition\,” Clayton says\, “but the real thrill comes from writing and hearing musicians breathe life into what I create.” He goes on\, “When composing or arranging for the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, I am a disciple of Duke Ellington\, Thad Jones\, Oliver Nelson\, Quincy Jones and Gil Evans\, to name just a few. I write for the individual artist\, not for the instrument.” \nClayton’s serious study of the double bass began at age 16 when he studied with famed bassist Ray Brown. At age 19\, John was the bassist for Henry Mancini’s television series “The Mancini Generation”.  Later\, he completed his studies at Indiana University in 1975\, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Double Bass. Touring with Monty Alexander and the Count Basie Orchestra followed. Four years later\, he held the principal bass position in the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for five years. \nJohn has written and arranged music\, often for the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, featuring Diana Krall\, McCoy Tyner\, Milt Jackson\, Quincy Jones\, Dr. John\, Charles Aznavour\, Dee Dee Bridgewater (including her GRAMMY© Award-winning CD Dear Ella\, for which John received a GRAMMY© nomination)\, Natalie Cole (another GRAMMY© nomination)\, Nancy Wilson\, George Benson\, Regina Carter and many others. \nHe has been commissioned by many ensembles\, including Cleveland City Music Orchestra\, the WDR Big Band\, the Amsterdam Philharmonic\, the American Jazz Philharmonic\, The Pittsburgh Pops\, The Iceland Symphony\, The Metropole Orchestra\, The Carnegie Hall Big Band\, and The Tri C Jazz Festival\, which is just a partial list. \nJohn Clayton served as the Artistic Director of Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl from 1999 through 2001. \nHe is no stranger to platinum record status having been awarded one for his stirring arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by Whitney Houston during the Super Bowl in 1990. John is also the past president of the International Society of Bassists and served as President of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers for five years. \nEducation is part of John’s lifeblood. He has taught at the Royal Dutch Conservatory in The Hague\, Holland\, UCLA\, Cal State Long Beach and for 21 years at the University of Southern California. \nJohn also served as the Artistic Director for the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival. As founder and Artistic Director of the Vail Jazz Workshop\, 12 top-level high school students from across the nation are chosen and participate in an intensive week of learning to play jazz. Recently retired from the role\, John served as the Director of Jazz for Centrum\, Port Townsend’s Jazz Camp for 20 years. The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra has existed for 40 years and was founded by its co-leaders\, John\, drummer Jeff Hamilton and recently deceased saxophonist Jeff Clayton\, John’s brother. The CHJO has been named the Best Big Band in America by both Downbeat Magazine and JazzTimes Magazine. \nTo sum up John Clayton’s unique expertise: John Clayton does it all. He is equally comfortable in jazz and classical music\, and hits the mark whether it is as a composer\, arranger\, conductor or teacher\, in addition to his magnificence on his bass. \nLearn more at johnclaytonjazz.com.
