Every time a jazz band takes the stage, a mini-democracy springs to life. Musicians must listen intently, give each other space to shine, and collaborate in real time to create something beautiful. It is a masterclass in civic engagement—and it is exactly what local students are experiencing firsthand through the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra’s (CCJO) youth education initiatives.
In partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, the CCJO proudly brings the Let Freedom Swing! program directly into classrooms and community centers across Greater Cincinnati. Originally envisioned by jazz icon Wynton Marsalis and Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, this free, live musical initiative uses the history of America’s greatest art form to teach the fundamental values of a democratic society.
Music with a Higher Purpose
For the CCJO, youth outreach is about much more than teaching notes on a page. "Let Freedom Swing" uses specific historical eras to explore deep social themes. Through interactive performances, students dive into:
- Jazz and Civil Rights: Examining how musicians used their art as a tool for social justice, equality, and message-delivery during the fight for civil rights.
- Jazz and the Harlem Renaissance: Exploring how an explosion of Black cultural and artistic expression re-shaped the American identity.
- Our Shared Future: Showing how the core mechanics of jazz—improvisation, swing, and blues—mirror the democratic pillars of individual freedom, collective responsibility, and resilience through adversity.
Striking a Chord Where It Matters Most
Artistic enrichment should never be a privilege reserved only for those who can afford it. That is why the CCJO focuses heavily on school districts and neighborhoods that have historically faced limited or underfunded access to arts education.
By bringing world-class, professional musicians directly into local schools at no cost to the students or administrators, the program breaks down socio-economic barriers. Students don't just sit back and listen to a concert; they engage in a dialogue, see their own voices reflected in the music, and witness the power of community collaboration up close.
Spreading the Rhythm Beyond the Classroom
The impact of this curriculum extends well past the school bell. The CCJO regularly packages these vital themes of freedom, democracy, and expression into multi-generational public library performances and community concerts often celebrated under the banner "Let Freedom Swing." These events bring families together, ensuring that the lessons of jazz history resonate across entire neighborhoods.
Through "Let Freedom Swing," the CCJO is helping to cultivate the next generation of listeners, musicians, and active, engaged citizens. By learning to play together, our youth are learning how to live together.
